PerkinElmer's expertise in the design and manufacturing of light sources for atomic absorption spectrometers traces back to our original hollow cathode lamps developed nearly 40 years ago. The use of special light sources and careful wavelength selection permits the specific determination of one element in the presence of others. The quality of the light source is of primary importance in obtaining the best linearity, sensitivity, and precision in atomic absorption.

For the Widest Selection of Elements
The basic components of an HCL are a sealed glass cylinder filled with argon or neon, an anode, a cathode (a hollow cylinder of the element whose spectrum is to be produced), and either a glass or quartz end window. HCLs emit light by ionizing the fill gas using an electrical potential applied between the anode and the cathode. The positively charged ions collide with the negatively charged cathode and dislodge individual metal atoms in a process known as "sputtering." These "sputtered" metal atoms are excited through impact with fill gas ions, and light of the specific wavelengths for that element is emitted when the atom "decays" from the excited state back to the more stable state.

Lumina multi-element coded hollow cathode lamps are available in two series: with and without an Intensitron adapter cable. Series N30501XX Lumina lamps, shown below, do not include an Intensitron adapter cable and are designed to be used with PerkinElmer's AAnalyst series of instruments.
